III. RECRUITMENT INITIATIVES

Brief Description of Activity

 

 

 

1.

Intern Program

Our SEU hosts an internship program for students studying mass communications at East Tennessee State University on an on-going basis.  Student interns are supervised by our Market and Business Manager, as well as the Program Directors and obtain first-hand experience in the many aspects of broadcasting, including sales, and programming.  Student interns are also encouraged to seek career advice from station personnel.  During this reporting period, our SEU maintained contact with ETSU to ensure our presence.

Our SEU currently has on staff a student intern from ITT Technical Institute, Johnson City, TN.  (November, 2015 through May, 2016) Student intern is supervised by our WKOS Program Director/IT Manager and is learning all aspects of IT systems, as well as studio broadcasting equipment.

Host event/program for or on behalf of an educational institution relating to careers in broadcasting

On November 13, 2015, our SEU’s Director of Group Marketing/Digital Content Manager who doubles as a vacation fill-in On-Air Personality of the SEU’s local morning talk show on station WJCW-AM gave a group of students from the Mass Communications class at Northeast State Community College, Johnson City, TN a tour of our facilities during which time he talked with the students the mechanics of radio and answered questions about careers in broadcasting.  The students also interacted with News Director, WQUT midday on-air personality and the Market Manager about a career in radio, job openings and internships.

Participate in event/program for or on behalf of an educational institution relating to careers in broadcasting

 

 

On February 22, 2016, our SEU’s Program Director of the SEU’s station WKOS-FM was invited to speak to East Tennessee State University’s Radio/TV/Film class.  He talked for approximately 2 hours with the students about career opportunities in radio broadcasting, focusing on how to prepare resume and aircheck to get hired as a radio announcer.  There was a question-and-answer session following his presentation.  Before departing, he also informed the students about job openings within the SEU as well as the possibility of future internships.

Host event/program for or on behalf of an educational institution relating to careers in broadcasting

On March 22, 2016, our SEU’s Director of Group Marketing/Digital Content Manager who doubles as a vacation fill-in On-Air Personality of the SEU’s local morning talk show on station WJCW-AM gave a group of students from the communications class at Kingsport Middle School, Kingsport, TN, a tour of our facilities during which time he talked with the students about how radio operates in this market and provided information about careers in broadcasting.  The students also interacted with News Director, WQUT midday on-air personality and the WXSM Program Director/afternoon on-air personality about a career in radio.
