BOSWELL—LIFE

SULLIVAN COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY GENERAL BARRY STAUBUS SAYS THE PROSECUTION WILL SEEK LIFE IN PRISON WITHOUT PAROLE IN THE CASE OF MEGAN BOSWELL—WHO IS CHARGED WITH THE MURDER OF HER DAUGHTER, BABY EVELYN.  BOSWELL’S ATTORNEY—BRAD SPROLES—SAID THE DEFENSE IS STILL WORKING THROUGH EVIDENCE.  A GRAND JURY INDICTED MEGAN ON 19 TOTAL CHARGES LAST YEAR, INCLUDING FELONY MURDER AND CHILD ABUSE.  BOSWELL HAS PLEADED NOT GUILTY.  HER NEXT COURT DATE IS SET FOR MAY 14TH.

WISE STABBING

THE WISE COUNTY VIRGINIA SHERIFF’S OFFICE IS LOOKING FOR A SUSPECT IN A STABBING INCIDENT.  JANUARY 20TH, DEPUTIES WERE CALLED ABOUT A STABBING IN THE EAST STONE GAP AREA AND FOUND A VICTIM WITH MULTIPLE INJURIES.  THE VICTIM WAS TAKEN TO A HOSPITAL FOR TREATMENT.  CORREL “IRAQ” BAKER OF KNOXVILLE IS WANTED ON CHARGES OF MALICIOUS WOUNDING AND STABBING IN THE COMMISSION OF A FELONY.

SURVEY:  65 PERCENT WILL GET VACCINE

A SURVEY FOUND 65 PERCENT OF THE REGION WILL GET THE COVID-19 VACCINE AS SOON AS THEY’RE SCHEDULED.  REGION AHEAD SURVEYED 768 PEOPLE IN A 22 COUNTY AREA—AS PART OF AN EFFORT TO CREATE A PUBLIC SERVICE CAMPAIGN.  8-PERCENT SAID THEY WOULDN’T CONSIDER VACCINATION, 16-PERCENT SAID THEY WOULD GET THE VACCINE AFTER WAITING 1 TO 6 MONTHS AND 11-PERCENT SAID THEY’RE NOT SURE.

MISSING TEEN FOUND

A MISSING 16-YEAR-OLD KINGSPORT GIRL HAS BEEN FOUND.  THURSDAY, POLICE ISSUED A RELEASE ABOUT TEMBER EVANS, WHO WAS LAST SEEN ON VIDEO TUESDAY EVENING.  FRIDAY, POLICE SAY SHE WAS FOUND SAFE AND IS NO LONGER CONSIDERED TO BE MISSING.

VIRGINIA SENATE

TAZEWELL COUNTY VIRGINIA BUSINESSMAN TRAVIS HACKWORTH HAS WON THE REPUBLICAN PRIMARY FOR THE 38TH DISTRICT SENATE SEAT.  HACKWORTH WAS ONE OF 6 CANDIDATES SEEKING THE NOMINATION TO REPLACE BEN CHAFIN, WHO DIED EARLIER THIS MONTH FROM COVID-19.  LAURIE BUCHWALD FROM RADFORD IS THE LONE DEMOCRAT IN THE RACE.  A SPECIAL ELECTION WILL BE HELD MARCH 23RD.  THE DISTRICT INCLUDES A GOOD CHUNK OF SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA, INCLUDING RUSSELL AND PART OF WISE COUNTIES.

SCHOOL UPDATES

CARTER COUNTY SCHOOLS WILL RETURN TO IN-PERSON LEARNING AT 100-PERCENT CAPACITY BEGINNING FEBRUARY 1ST.  THIS IS FOR STUDENTS WHO CHOSE TO ATTEND IN-PERSON.  IN-CLASS INSTRUCTION WILL BE MONDAYS THROUGH THURSDAYS AND FRIDAYS WILL BE VIRTUAL.  ALSO, BRISTOL VIRGINIA PUBLIC SCHOOLS WILL BEGIN IN-PERSON LEARNING ON MONDAY JANUARY 25TH.  SUMMER LEARNING IS ALSO IN THE WORKS TO HELP STUDENTS WHO’VE FALLEN BEHIND BECAUSE OF COVID-19 AND VIRTUAL LEARNING.
